Chelsea have finalised a £60 million agreement to sign Brighton forward Joao Pedro, continuing their aggressive summer recruitment.

The Brazilian, 23, will pen a seven-year deal and could feature in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras in Philadelphia, scheduled for 02:00 BST on Friday. He is en route to complete a medical in the U.S.

Brighton previously rejected two approaches from unnamed Premier League clubs before accepting Chelsea’s proposal, structured as £55 million upfront and £5 million in potential add-ons. Newcastle had also been tracking Pedro.

His arrival comes hot on the heels of an agreement to bring in English winger Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund. That move, valued at £55 million, was completed on Saturday — just hours before Chelsea’s victory over Benfica booked their place in the Club World Cup last eight. Gittens, however, is unable to feature in the tournament, having played earlier rounds with Dortmund.

Pedro moves to Stamford Bridge after two productive campaigns with Brighton, where he registered 30 goals and added 10 assists across 70 appearances. That followed his £30 million switch from Watford in 2023, which had set a then-club record for the Seagulls.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler omitted Pedro from the final Premier League match of the season citing a “small issue”.

Chelsea’s forward ranks continue to grow. Liam Delap recently completed a £30 million transfer from Ipswich, joining the list of new attacking additions. Over the course of the summer, Chelsea’s spending on young prospects has reached approximately £170 million, having also brought in Portuguese midfielder Dario Essugo and French centre-back Mamadou Sarr.

Pedro’s integration could trigger a potential exit for Christopher Nkunku, given both players often operate across similar positions in advanced areas. Gittens, meanwhile, is a replacement for Jadon Sancho, whose brief Chelsea stint ended with a return to Manchester United for a £5 million termination fee.

With Mykhailo Mudryk provisionally suspended for a failed drugs test, attacking changes remain likely. Delap provides much-needed depth for periods when Nicolas Jackson is unavailable. Noni Madueke’s future is uncertain after 18-year-old Brazilian Estevao Willian joined from Palmeiras.

Further signings are expected to slow down, as Chelsea now shift their focus to selling from their bloated squad. Clubs aware of Chelsea’s surplus may attempt reduced-price negotiations for fringe players.

Included in the likely departures are Joao Felix, Raheem Sterling, Armando Broja, and Carney Chukwuemeka — none of whom are with Chelsea’s current U.S. tour squad.

Chelsea’s recruitment drive has prompted questions over balance, but internally the belief remains that their depth is necessary for challenges such as the Club World Cup and the upcoming return to Champions League football.
