Arteta Hails Officials After Arsenal Survive West Ham Scare to Stay on Title Course
- Arsenal beat West Ham 1-0 to restore a five-point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League title race
- Mikel Arteta praised officials for a “brave” VAR decision to disallow West Ham’s stoppage-time equaliser
- Injury concerns emerged for Arsenal after Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori were both forced off
Mikel Arteta praised the match officials for making what he described as a “brave” and decisive VAR call after Arsenal held on for a dramatic 1-0 win over West Ham United that kept their Premier League title hopes firmly in their own hands.
Arsenal restored their five-point advantage over Manchester City thanks to Leandro Trossard’s deflected strike in the 83rd minute at the London Stadium, but the game exploded into controversy deep into stoppage time when Callum Wilson thought he had rescued a crucial point for West Ham.
The substitute bundled home in the 94th minute, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters, only for VAR official Darren England to advise referee Chris Kavanagh to review the build-up on the pitchside monitor. After a lengthy check, the goal was ruled out for a foul in the attacking phase, allowing Arsenal to escape with a victory that could prove season-defining.
Arteta, who has often voiced frustration with officiating decisions this season, surprisingly applauded the refereeing team afterward for handling such a high-pressure moment with conviction.
The Arsenal manager said the officials deserved credit for remaining consistent with the standards they had discussed throughout the campaign, adding that the referee was given the opportunity to step away from the emotion of the occasion and make what he believed was the correct decision.
Arteta described the intervention as “very brave” given the magnitude of the moment, insisting the replay showed a clear foul and that disallowing the goal was ultimately the right outcome.
The Spaniard also reflected on the immense pressure referees face in matches carrying enormous consequences at both ends of the table. Arsenal are battling Manchester City for the title, while West Ham remain locked in a desperate fight to avoid relegation.
Arteta admitted the incident reinforced just how difficult refereeing at the highest level can be, saying moments like that can alter the direction of entire seasons for clubs chasing vastly different objectives.
The victory leaves Arsenal in a commanding position heading into the final stretch of the campaign. With matches remaining against Burnley and Crystal Palace, the Gunners know two more wins would secure a first Premier League crown since 2004 regardless of Manchester City’s results.
However, the result may have come at a cost physically.
Ben White left the stadium wearing a knee brace, with Arteta admitting the early signs surrounding the defender’s injury “do not look good.” Riccardo Calafiori was also forced off at halftime with an unspecified issue, creating fresh concern ahead of Arsenal’s final push domestically and in Europe.
Still, after reaching the Champions League final earlier in the week and now surviving another huge Premier League test, Arsenal continue to build momentum at exactly the right time.
