  • Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a 96th-minute equaliser on his Everton debut, curling a 25-yard strike into the top corner to snatch a 2-2 draw against Manchester United.
  • The deadline day signing became the first player to score on his Everton debut in the years following Richarlison’s effort in August 2018, and the first in club history to score from outside the penalty area on a Premier League debut.
  • Manager David Moyes says his small squad means fringe players have to be ready to contribute, with Maitland-Niles and fellow new arrival Tyrique George already delivering.

From the Bench to the Top Corner in Ninety-Six Minutes

Ainsley Maitland-Niles had been on the pitch for a little over half an hour when the ball dropped to him twenty-five yards from goal. Everton trailed Manchester United for the second time in the match, Benjamin Sesko’s header eight minutes earlier looking set to hand the visitors a first away win of the season. Maitland-Niles took a touch, opened his body, and curled a shot beyond Senne Lammens and into the top corner. The clock read 95:11. It was his first touch of note in an Everton shirt, and it turned a defeat into a draw.

“It felt like a win,” Maitland-Niles said afterwards, speaking to Sky Sports. “We dug deep and managed to get a point in the end. The crowd were with us, and we were fighting to the end, and that’s why you get those results.”

The former Arsenal defender signed for Everton on deadline day for a reported £4.3m, a fee that drew little fanfare at the time. Jamie Carragher had already labelled Everton’s transfer window “disastrous” after a summer spent watching Iliman Ndiaye leave for Manchester City and Beto depart for Fiorentina, with only Thierno Barry arriving as a recognised forward. Maitland-Niles’ signing, by contrast, barely registered outside Merseyside. Sunday afternoon changed that.

A Debut That Rewrote the Club Record Books

Timed at 95:11, the goal stands as the latest a player has scored at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium. Maitland-Niles became the first player to score on his Everton debut in the years following Richarlison’s effort in August 2018, and the first in the club’s history to do so with a strike from outside the penalty area. For a player last on the Premier League scoresheet in December 2018, the moment carried personal significance too.

“It’s amazing to get the goal; everyone wants to start off like that, and thankfully I did,” Maitland-Niles said. “The ball fell to me on the edge of the box; I put my foot through it, and it ended up in the top corner, which I’m happy about. I came in to work hard. It’s a team full of hard workers, so I fit right in. I’m going to show I can fit right in and contribute everything I’ve got, the same as everyone else, if not more.”

Manchester United had led twice through Bryan Mbeumo and Sesko, either side of a Tyrique George equaliser for the hosts. It is now the second time in fifty years that United have conceded at least twice in each of their opening three league games of a season, a run that stretches back to 2020-21. For David Moyes, the shape of his squad this season means those defensive lapses elsewhere on the pitch have to be absorbed by whoever is available, including players who arrived with days to spare before the window shut.

Moyes Leans on a Smaller Squad

“Sometimes when you’ve got less players, it means everyone has to be ready,” Moyes said. “Players on the fringes are going to have to show why they deserve to be involved. When you’ve got a small squad you have to find a way to make it work.”

Asked specifically about his new signing, Moyes admitted there was still work to do getting to know him. “The technique. The goalkeeper hardly moved. We haven’t had much of a chance to get to know Ainsley yet, and his role. It’ll take a bit of time.” That the goal came without Moyes having settled on a defined role for Maitland-Niles only adds to the shock of its timing.

Everton’s summer business left them short in attack, with Barry recording more expected-goals value than any other player on the pitch on Sunday without landing a single shot on target. That the equaliser instead came from a versatile defender who spent much of his Arsenal career shuffled between right-back and midfield speaks to how thin David Moyes’ options are in forward areas, and how much responsibility now falls on players signed to add depth rather than firepower.

Everton’s Unbeaten Start Continues

The result leaves Everton unbeaten through the opening weeks of the season, a position few predicted given the frustration around their transfer business. Moyes has now overseen back-to-back home fixtures without defeat, and while Sunday’s point came against the run of play for long spells, the manner of the equaliser gave supporters at Hill Dickinson Stadium a moment to remember on a day the club’s squad depth had been the story beforehand.

“For us, to give the crowd moments, it was a big moment,” Moyes said. “But I wanted to win and I thought we were capable of winning. I need to win my home games. You don’t plan as a manager to equalise in the last minute. But I thought the boys did amazing to keep running. We did well to ride their pressure and we got the great finish to end.”

Everton travel to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday 12 September looking to extend their unbeaten run, while Manchester United have little time to dwell on a third consecutive game conceding twice, hosting Sabah in their opening Champions League fixture on Thursday. For Maitland-Niles, the challenge now is turning one outrageous moment into a consistent role in a squad that, on the evidence of deadline day alone, could end up needing him more than anyone expected.

Everton’s summer has been picked apart by pundits and supporters alike, but a goal timed at 95:11 does not care about a transfer window’s reputation. It simply changes the result on the day, and gives a new signing a story that will follow him around Merseyside for a long time to come.
