Arne Slot cautious on Alexander Isak return ahead of Manchester City clash
- Arne Slot says Alexander Isak is not ready to start after injury absence
- Liverpool prepare for FA Cup quarter final against Manchester City
- Mohamed Salah available, while Alisson Becker remains unavailable
Arne Slot has said it is too soon for Alexander Isak to start for Liverpool following his return to training after a long term injury.
Isak trained with the squad for the first time in more than 100 days after sustaining a leg and ankle injury in a match against Tottenham Hotspur in December. The striker joined Liverpool from Newcastle United last summer in a deal valued at £125m.
Slot confirmed that the forward is unlikely to be included in the starting lineup for the FA Cup quarter final against Manchester City. He said the priority is to rebuild match fitness gradually after a prolonged absence from competitive football.
The manager added that Isak’s return provides an additional attacking option, though any involvement from the bench will depend on match conditions and the player’s physical response following training sessions. He noted that the potential for extra time in cup competition adds complexity to decisions regarding limited minutes.
Slot stated that Isak has made strong progress during rehabilitation and appears physically stronger than before the injury. He added that expectations for the remainder of the current season should remain measured, with a full pre season viewed as key to future performance levels.
Liverpool will be without Alisson Becker for the trip to the Etihad Stadium and the upcoming Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain.
Jeremie Frimpong and Mohamed Salah are expected to be available. Salah recently confirmed that the current campaign will be his final season at Liverpool.
Slot praised Salah’s contribution to the club, citing his record of goals, trophies and individual recognition. He added that there remains an opportunity for the forward to add further honours before the end of the season.
