A broad agreement has been struck that brings Marcus Rashford closer to securing a temporary move from Manchester United to Barcelona.

Intermediaries have been involved in ongoing talks, which have led to a verbal understanding between the clubs. The proposed deal would see Rashford join on loan with an option for Barcelona to make the move permanent.

The 27-year-old forward has not featured for United since December 12, when he was taken off during a 2-1 Europa League win against Viktoria Plzen. His situation at the club has been under scrutiny ever since his omission by head coach Ruben Amorim, who questioned his work rate alongside Alejandro Garnacho.

Rashford was sent on loan to Aston Villa for the latter half of last season, where he produced four goals and six assists in 17 appearances. However, with Amorim building a squad shift at United, Rashford, the club’s highest-paid player on £325,000 per week, was among five men told to train away from the senior group.

The England international is not expected to play for United again under Amorim and was left behind while the team travelled to Sweden for a summer pre-season match which ended 0-0 against Leeds.

Barcelona had hoped to land Nico Williams earlier in the summer—but he committed his future to Athletic Bilbao with a 10-year contract. Rashford fits within the Catalan club’s revised plans, and there’s admiration from Barcelona’s leadership.

“We like Luis, we like Rashford and we like other players,” sporting director Deco told RAC1 in May, naming both the Englishman and Liverpool’s Luis Díaz among potential targets.

Rashford himself added fuel to that interest last month, in a conversation with Spanish influencer Javi Ruiz. When asked about Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, Rashford said: “Everyone wants to play with the best. Hopefully… We’ll see.”

Should the move go through, Rashford would join a side fresh off a league and cup double under Hansi Flick. From a Manchester United perspective, Rashford’s loan would provide valuable savings toward rebuilding—a necessity after committing over £130m to land Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

Rashford still has three years left on his deal at Old Trafford but has not been handed a squad number for the new campaign.

Having debuted under Louis van Gaal in 2016, Rashford has to date racked up 138 goals in 426 appearances for United. He has described 2024 as the year he felt it was “time for a new challenge.” A move to Spain now appears closer than ever.
