  • Michael Carrick says achievement should not be “over celebrated”
  • Casemiro set to leave despite key role in win over Brentford

Michael Carrick has urged restraint despite Manchester United moving to the brink of Champions League qualification with a 2-1 win over Brentford.

The result leaves United needing just two more points from their remaining four matches to guarantee a return to Europe’s top competition for the first time since the 2023-24 season.

While acknowledging the significance of the achievement, Carrick insisted his side must remain focused on finishing the campaign strongly.

“We’ve given ourselves a great chance and put ourselves in a strong position,” he said. “But the Champions League is not something we should be over celebrating. We want to finish as high as possible and keep pushing for more points.”

United’s goals at Old Trafford came from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko, with the Brazilian continuing his influential season. Supporters chanted in support of Casemiro during the match, but Carrick confirmed the midfielder will still depart at the end of the campaign.

“It’s pretty clear from both sides,” Carrick said. “To his credit, he’s given absolutely everything and delivered big moments for us.”

Carrick praised his squad for their consistency in a competitive Premier League season, highlighting the difficulty of securing wins.

“It’s a tough league and the players deserve credit for the number of wins we’ve achieved,” he added.

Manchester United are now firmly in control of their Champions League destiny but face a crucial run-in as they aim to finish the season on a high note rather than easing off after reaching their primary objective.
