Cavan Sullivan, 17, Became USA’s Youngest Ever Goalscorer While Man City’s Transfer Hangs in Doubt

  • Cavan Sullivan became the youngest goalscorer in United States men’s national team history at 17 years and five days old, with a lob over Mexico’s goalkeeper in a 3-0 friendly win in Arizona.
  • He broke a record that had stood for just five days, set by Mathis Albert’s goal against Chile the previous Wednesday.
  • Sullivan is contracted to join Manchester City next season after the club signed him from Philadelphia Union as a 14-year-old in 2024, but the move is now uncertain after City were found guilty of breaking the majority of 115 financial charges against them.

A Five-Day-Old Record, Broken by a Lob Over the Mexico Goalkeeper

Cavan Sullivan had been on the pitch less than half an hour when he made history. Intercepting a loose pass from Mexico defender Raul Rangel, the 17-year-old lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper and watched it drop into the net. It was the 62nd minute of a friendly in Arizona, the United States were already ahead through 18-year-old Julian Hall, and Sullivan had just become the youngest goalscorer in the history of the US men’s national team.

“These are the moments you dream of when you’re a three, four, five or six-year-old,” Sullivan said. “I manifested this moment, not just these past couple of hours when I found out I was starting, but my whole life.”

A Record That Lasted Five Days

Sullivan was 17 years and five days old when he scored. The record he broke belonged to Mathis Albert, who had set it with a goal against Chile the previous Wednesday at 17 years and 131 days old. Albert held the mark for five days before Sullivan took it from him.

“I just remember chipping the ball, hoping it didn’t hit the crossbar or go over,” Sullivan said. “I was getting nervous when it was in the air and then everything was a blur.”

A Teenage Core Takes Shape

Sullivan was not the only teenager to make an impact against Mexico. Julian Hall, 18, opened the scoring in the 28th minute before Sullivan’s record-breaking goal doubled the lead, and Malik Tillman completed the scoring. Mexico’s night got worse when substitute Luis Chavez was sent off for shoving his hand into the face of Sebastian Berhalter in the 68th minute.

A Manchester City Signing Since He Was 14

Sullivan currently plays for MLS club Philadelphia Union, where he made his debut at 14, but he has belonged to Manchester City on paper since 2024, when the English club secured his signature at that same age. He is set to join City next season.

That move is no longer straightforward. City have been found guilty of breaking the majority of the 115 financial charges brought against them, and the club is expected to appeal the verdict. What the finding means for City’s recruitment plans, including whether they can go ahead with signings already agreed like Sullivan’s, is still unresolved.

What Happens Next

Sullivan will return to Philadelphia Union for the rest of the MLS season while the uncertainty around Manchester City’s punishment plays out. USA coach Mauricio Pochettino has already described him as “unbelievable” in the build-up to the Mexico game. If the move to Manchester goes ahead as planned, Sullivan would arrive at a club facing unprecedented sanctions, on terms agreed back in 2024, long before a lob over Mexico’s goalkeeper gave Americans another reason to pay attention to where he ends up.
