A Free-Kick Became a Red Card After One Look at the Monitor
Clinton Morrison had no doubt about the decision that shaped Manchester United’s night in Madrid. Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Special, he said: “It is soft! No way, that should not be a red.”
Sky Sports described the dismissal of Leny Yoro as controversial. It came in United’s Champions League league phase defeat at Atletico Madrid on Tuesday evening, when Yoro came together with Jonathan David just inside United’s half.
How the Decision Changed Hands
The Independent reported that David had been played through on goal and that Yoro put his arm across the Atletico forward. Nyberg’s first call went against David. He gave Atletico a free-kick, judging that David had controlled the ball with his hands as he fell.
The VAR then sent Nyberg to the pitchside monitor, and he reversed the decision. The Independent noted that he reversed his call after what it called the “light touch” from Yoro across David’s chest. Nyberg decided that Yoro had denied David a goalscoring opportunity and showed a straight red card.
It was the first red card of the 20-year-old’s career.
What Followed for United
Atletico already led through Pablo Barrios, who scored in the first minute. Ademola Lookman made it 2-0 in the 79th minute, scoring from the rebound after Senne Lammens saved David’s shot.
The Independent also reported that United wasted several chances after falling behind. Bryan Mbeumo missed two and Bruno Fernandes hit the crossbar. Nyberg’s decision left United to play the closing stages with ten men.
United travel to Leeds United on Sunday.
