David Beckham has revealed that Nasser Al-Khelaifi told him Luis Enrique was so dedicated to rebuilding Paris Saint-Germain that he “virtually slept” at the club’s training ground during his first year in charge.
PSG secured a place in their second consecutive Champions League final after overcoming Bayern Munich 6-5 on aggregate following a composed 1-1 draw in Munich on Wednesday.
After years of pursuing European success through superstar signings, Beckham believes PSG’s recent transformation has instead been driven by Enrique’s work ethic and tactical discipline.
“That’s how Luis Enrique has built them for the last few years,” Beckham said during CBS’ Beckham and Friends Live. “He has built this team to be so together.”
The former PSG midfielder said club president Al-Khelaifi described Enrique’s obsession with detail and preparation during his early months at the club.
“He virtually slept every night at the training facility,” Beckham said. “Working on how he wanted the team to look, how he wanted them to play, what the future looked like. Nasser said he had never seen anything like it.”
PSG’s current success marks a major shift from the club’s previous “Galacticos” era, when the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi formed a star-studded attack but failed to deliver the Champions League trophy.
Under Enrique, PSG finally lifted the trophy last season with a dominant win over Inter Milan and now have the opportunity to become only the second club to successfully defend the title in the modern era.
PSG will face Arsenal in the final in Budapest on May 30 as they chase another piece of European history.
