  • Liverpool have confirmed the appointment of Andoni Iraola as their new head coach following Arne Slot’s dismissal.
  • The Spaniard arrives after leading Bournemouth to a historic sixth-place Premier League finish and European qualification.
  • Iraola has pledged to bring intensity, aggression and attacking football to Anfield while maintaining the identity that made his Bournemouth side one of England’s most exciting teams.

Liverpool have turned to one of the Premier League’s rising managerial stars after confirming the appointment of Andoni Iraola as the club’s new head coach.

The 43-year-old arrives at Anfield following an impressive three-year spell at Bournemouth, where he transformed the south coast club into one of the division’s most energetic and entertaining teams, culminating in a sixth-place finish and qualification for European football for the first time in the club’s history.

Iraola replaces Arne Slot, whose two-year reign came to an abrupt end despite delivering Liverpool’s 20th league title during his first season in charge. A disappointing fifth-place finish in the most recent campaign ultimately convinced the club hierarchy to make a change.

Liverpool’s pursuit of a successor moved quickly. Sources indicated that Iraola emerged as the clear frontrunner almost immediately and was the only candidate formally interviewed for the role.

The appointment reflects Liverpool’s desire to return to a more aggressive, front-foot style of football, a philosophy that defined much of the club’s success under Jürgen Klopp and one that closely aligns with Iraola’s coaching principles.

Speaking after his appointment, Iraola admitted the opportunity was impossible to ignore.

“You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool,” he said.

“But obviously the atmosphere, the supporters, the club, the players, the chance for me to coach top-level players, the chance to fight for titles. I think it cannot be more attractive than this. It’s difficult to find it. So, really excited to start.”

The Basque coach has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most progressive managers. After beginning his coaching journey with AEK Larnaca in Cyprus, he earned widespread recognition at Mirandés and Rayo Vallecano before arriving in England with Bournemouth in 2023.

His work at the Vitality Stadium caught Liverpool’s attention not only because of results but because of the style in which they were achieved.

Bournemouth consistently punched above their weight despite operating with a significantly smaller budget than many of their rivals. Their aggressive pressing, relentless intensity and rapid transitions became trademarks under Iraola.

Liverpool’s hierarchy also value his track record in player development, particularly among attacking players, an area the club believes will be crucial as a new generation emerges at Anfield.

Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s sporting director, played a key role in bringing Iraola to Merseyside. Hughes was responsible for appointing him at Bournemouth in 2023 and maintained a strong professional relationship with the Spaniard throughout his time on the south coast.

Iraola believes his experience in England will help smooth the transition.

“I think I have the advantage that I’ve been here already three years in the Premier League, and people for sure have seen Bournemouth play,” he said.

“There are some things that obviously we need to change, coaching Liverpool, but I wouldn’t like to lose our identity — the intensity, the aggressiveness, the organization.

“Certain things that I would like always to have in my team.”

While acknowledging the step up in expectations, Iraola was clear that adapting to Liverpool’s squad does not mean abandoning the principles that have brought him success.

“Obviously you have to adapt to the players you have, and it’s not the same at one club or the other, but there are fundamentals that I also think match quite well with what Liverpool has been during a lot of years, and I think we can make it work.”

For Liverpool supporters, the appointment signals the beginning of a new chapter after a turbulent end to the Slot era.

There will inevitably be questions about whether Iraola can replicate his Bournemouth success under the intense scrutiny that comes with managing one of the world’s biggest clubs. Yet there is also genuine excitement around a coach whose teams play with courage, conviction and relentless energy.

Liverpool wanted a manager capable of reconnecting the team with the club’s traditional identity. In Iraola, they believe they have found exactly that.
