Messi faces lawsuit over missed friendly appearance in Miami

  • VID Music Group claims $7 million deal required Messi to play at least 30 minutes
  • Lawsuit alleges financial losses after late decision and reduced ticket sales

It is a reminder, if one was needed, that modern football stretches far beyond the pitch.

Lionel Messi now finds himself at the centre of a legal dispute in the United States, with a Miami-based events company claiming his absence from a friendly last year cost them millions.

The game itself was forgettable. Argentina against Venezuela in October, an exhibition fixture in the middle of a busy calendar. Messi did not play. He watched from the stands.

But the consequences have lingered.

VID Music Group, the promoter behind the match, say there was an agreement in place. Messi, they claim, was expected to play at least 30 minutes in that game and another friendly against Puerto Rico, unless injured.

He did not feature against Venezuela. The following day, he played for Inter Miami and scored twice. A few days later, he appeared in the second friendly.

That sequence sits at the heart of the case.

The promoter argues they were only informed of Messi’s absence shortly before kickoff, leaving little time to adjust expectations or ticket sales. Attendance suffered, they say, and so did the finances. The deal itself was worth around $7 million, with the player’s involvement central to its value.

From Messi’s side, the context is different. The fixture did not fall within an official international window recognised by Major League Soccer. There was no obligation for him to play. Priorities were elsewhere, namely keeping himself ready for club commitments.

That is where these situations often become complicated. Contracts, expectations, commercial realities. A friendly becomes something more when it is built around one player.

The Argentine Football Association is also named in the lawsuit, which includes claims of breach of contract and misrepresentation.   The outcome will likely hinge on the detail. What was promised, what was guaranteed, and what was ultimately delivered.

There is no immediate resolution. Cases like this rarely move quickly.

In the background, Messi continues his career much as before. There is also the question of what comes next internationally. Lionel Scaloni has made clear that any involvement in the 2026 World Cup will depend on Messi himself. Fitness, motivation, timing.

For now, though, the focus shifts briefly away from football.

Even for someone as established as Messi, the game still finds new ways to intrude.
