José Mourinho has made it clear that Gianluca Prestianni will have no future at Benfica if he is found guilty of racially abusing Vinícius Júnior of Real Madrid.

The 20 year-old Argentinian winger is under investigation by UEFA following allegations made by Vinícius during last month’s Champions League playoff first leg in Lisbon. Prestianni denies the claims but was handed a provisional onematch suspension, which ruled him out of the return leg that Madrid won to reach the last 16.

Mourinho initially faced criticism for suggesting Vinícius had incited the home crowd with his celebrations and for not directly condemning his player. However, speaking ahead of Benfica’s league match on Monday, the Portuguese coach struck a far firmer tone.

“I am completely, utterly opposed to any kind of discrimination or prejudice or ignorance or stupidity,” said José Mourinho.

“If my player did not respect these principles, which are mine and Benfica’s as well, then that player’s career with a coach named José Mourinho and at a club named Benfica will come to an end.

“I believe in the presumption of innocence, which is a human right. But if the player is indeed guilty, I will never look at him the way I looked at him before. With me, it is over.”

The flashpoint came after Vinícius scored the only goal of the first leg at the Estadio da Luz. Prestianni was seen covering his mouth with his shirt as he allegedly directed a comment towards the Brazilian forward.

UEFA’s investigation is ongoing, with Prestianni facing the prospect of a lengthy suspension if found guilty. For Mourinho, the stance is unambiguous. Respect, he insists, is non negotiable, and any breach will bring swift and final consequences.
