Phil Parkinson Says Wrexham Were ‘Feeling Sorry for Ourselves’ After Hull Defeat

• Wrexham missed the chance to move into the Championship top five after losing 2-1 at home to Hull City.
• Goals from Joe Gelhardt and Lewis Koumas secured victory for the visitors despite a late strike from Nathan Broadhead.
• Manager Phil Parkinson pointed to injuries and suspension affecting the squad after their recent FA Cup defeat.

Wrexham A.F.C. manager Phil Parkinson said his team were “feeling sorry for ourselves” following a 2-1 defeat to Hull City A.F.C. that cost them the chance to move into the top five of the EFL Championship.

Wrexham entered the match with the opportunity to overtake Hull in the table but suffered their first league defeat in five games. The visitors took control through goals from Joe Gelhardt and Lewis Koumas in either half.

Nathan Broadhead reduced the deficit in the 76th minute to give the home side hope of a late comeback, but Hull held on to secure the three points.

The defeat came only three days after Wrexham’s 4-2 extra time loss to Chelsea F.C. in the FA Cup. Parkinson said the demanding fixture and squad issues had affected the team.

“I just felt there’s an element of maybe Kieffer getting injured, Dobbo suspended, a little bit maybe feeling sorry for ourselves,” Parkinson said.

Wrexham were without top scorer Kieffer Moore after he suffered a hamstring injury during the FA Cup match, while midfielder George Dobson was suspended following a red card in the same game.

Parkinson said the absence of Moore and injuries to players including Liberato Cacace contributed to a sense of disappointment within the dressing room.

“We’ve always had a real resilience about us here,” he said. “But with the news about Kieffer and Libby and things like that, I just felt there was that little bit of flatness.”

He added that the team must respond quickly when they face Swansea City A.F.C. in their next match.

Parkinson also indicated that Moore is a “big doubt” for Wales national football team ahead of their World Cup qualifying playoff against Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team on March 26.

Hull were largely in control throughout the match and were rarely threatened until Broadhead’s late goal. The victory was their eighth win in the last 10 away games and strengthened their position in the play off places.

The result also gave Hull revenge for their defeat to Wrexham earlier in the season in the EFL Cup when the Welsh side recovered from a 3-1 deficit before winning on penalties.

Hull manager Sergej Jakirović praised his team’s performance after the match.

“It’s a very important three points and a very big victory against a very good team,” Jakirović said. “They have shown all season they are playing good football, especially at home.”
