  • Real Madrid have signed France defender Ibrahima Konaté on a free transfer following his departure from Liverpool.
  • The centre-back has signed a contract until 2030 and becomes Madrid’s third signing of the summer.
  • Konaté joins as part of a major rebuild under returning coach José Mourinho after two trophyless seasons.

Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of France international Ibrahima Konaté on a free transfer after the defender’s contract with Liverpool expired.

Konaté has signed a five-year deal that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until 2030, becoming the latest addition to Madrid’s squad as the club continues a significant summer overhaul.

The 27-year-old is Madrid’s third signing of the transfer window following the arrivals of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea and Bernardo Silva from Manchester City.

ESPN previously reported that Madrid also have an agreement in place to sign Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries in a deal worth €20 million.

The recruitment drive comes after a disappointing period for the Spanish giants, who have gone two consecutive seasons without winning a major trophy. The club responded by appointing José Mourinho for a second spell in charge following the departure of Álvaro Arbeloa.

Madrid had identified Konaté as a priority target well before he became available. The club first explored a move for the defender during the final year of his Liverpool contract and maintained interest throughout prolonged negotiations between the player and the Premier League side.

As recently as April, Konaté suggested there was a strong possibility he would remain at Anfield, but talks over a new contract ultimately failed to produce an agreement.

Liverpool confirmed in May that the France international would leave the club upon the expiration of his contract, allowing Madrid to complete the deal without paying a transfer fee.

Konaté arrives to strengthen a defensive unit that is undergoing transition following David Alaba’s departure.

He will compete for a starting place alongside Antonio Rüdiger, who recently signed a new contract, as well as Dean Huijsen, Raúl Asencio and Éder Militão.

After beginning his professional career with Sochaux, Konaté moved to RB Leipzig, where he established himself as one of Europe’s most promising young defenders before joining Liverpool in 2021 in a deal worth £40 million.

During his time at Anfield, he made 183 appearances and helped Liverpool win the Premier League title, the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups.

Konaté is currently part of France’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was an unused substitute during Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over Senegal in France’s opening Group I match.

With his future now resolved, Konaté will look to play a key role for both France at the World Cup and Real Madrid as the Spanish club begins a new era under Mourinho.
