Reece James Signs New Six-Year Chelsea Contract Until 2032
  • Reece James has signed a new six-year contract with Chelsea F.C. that runs until 2032.
  • The defender has made 225 appearances and captained the club since 2023.
  • Chelsea moved early to extend the deal before his previous contract, due to expire in 2028, entered its final year.

Chelsea have confirmed that captain Reece James has signed a new six-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032.

James, 26, has been part of the club since the age of six and rose through the academy before establishing himself as a first-team regular. He was appointed club captain in 2023 and has become one of the team’s most influential players.

His previous contract was set to expire in 2028, but Chelsea opted to extend the deal well in advance. The club moved to avoid a situation in which the defender could enter the final year of his contract and potentially leave on a free transfer, similar to the departures of Antonio Rüdiger to Real Madrid CF and Andreas Christensen to FC Barcelona.

James has made 225 appearances for Chelsea and was part of the side that won the UEFA Champions League in 2021 and the FIFA Club World Cup last summer.

He signed his first professional contract in March 2017 and was named the club’s Academy Player of the Season that year while helping the youth side win the FA Youth Cup.

James’ only spell away from Stamford Bridge came during a loan at Wigan Athletic F.C., where he enjoyed an impressive campaign playing mainly in midfield and was named the club’s Player of the Season.

Since returning to Chelsea ahead of the 2019–20 season, James has been a regular presence in the team. Despite injury setbacks during his career, he has remained a key figure under coaches including Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, operating primarily at right-back while also featuring in midfield.

Speaking after signing the new deal, James said he was delighted to commit his future to the club.

“I am over the moon to have extended my contract. Chelsea means so much to me,” he said.

“I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes.

“I’m excited for the future under this ownership, sporting directors, coach and all the staff, and hopefully we will lift many more trophies together over the coming years.”

Chelsea sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart welcomed the agreement and praised James’ leadership.

“On behalf of ownership and everyone connected to Chelsea, it is a proud moment for all of us to have Reece extend his contract,” they said.

“He is the leader of this team, both on and off the pitch. Reece knows what it means to wear this badge and, having committed his long-term future to Chelsea, we’re looking forward to continuing the journey and working towards further success together.”
