Rosenior Defends Jørgensen After Error in Chelsea’s Champions League Defeat
• Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen was criticised after an error in the 5-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
• Liam Rosenior defended his selection decision despite the costly mistake.
• PSG scored three late goals to take a strong advantage into the second leg.
Chelsea F.C. head coach Liam Rosenior defended goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen after his error during the 5-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain F.C. in their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 first-leg tie.
Rosenior surprised many by selecting Jørgensen ahead of regular first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sánchez. The decision proved costly when Jørgensen made a mistake that allowed PSG to take a 3-2 lead.
During the match, midfielders Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo were visibly frustrated with the goalkeeper, with Fernández throwing the ball toward him following the error.
Despite the incident, Rosenior defended his decision to start the Denmark international.
“Sánchez or Jørgensen? They have different qualities,” Rosenior said.
“Rob is outstanding from crosses and an outstanding shot-stopper. Filip has amazing qualities too. One of the reasons we won at Aston Villa was because we were so calm in possession.
“But players sometimes make mistakes. Filip isn’t the first one to make a mistake, that’s part of football, but he has put his hands up in the dressing room.”
Rosenior also pointed out that PSG’s fourth goal, scored by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, was beyond the reach of any goalkeeper.
“The fourth goal from Kvaratskhelia was an unbelievable strike. No keeper in the world can get that,” he said.
Chelsea remained competitive for much of the match before conceding three goals in the final 16 minutes. Kvaratskhelia scored twice, while Vitinha also found the net as PSG extended their advantage.
The late goals leave Chelsea facing a difficult task ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge next week.
Rosenior said his team struggled to respond after setbacks during the closing stages of the match.
“The last 15 to 20 minutes were crazy, but that’s on me,” he said. “We need to be better when setbacks happen, be calm and collected, and that didn’t happen.
“It’s a painful one because we were in the tie for 75 minutes. We have shot ourselves in the foot and made the tie very difficult now.”
Rosenior also acknowledged the challenge posed by PSG’s attacking players.
“In the Premier League you don’t face the likes of Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, Désiré Doué and Kvaratskhelia,” he said.
“Two goals makes it achievable, but three goals makes it very difficult now. But it is not impossible.”
