Balogun Torments Australia as USA Win Back-to-Back World Cup Games for First Time in 96 Years

The United States’ World Cup bandwagon gathered further momentum as the co-hosts swept past Australia 2-0 in Seattle to book their place in the knockout rounds with a group game to spare. Mauricio Pochettino’s side were as bright as the Pacific Northwest sunshine, pressing high and overwhelming Tony Popovic’s Socceroos from the opening whistle in a performance made all the more impressive by the absence of star attacker Christian Pulisic.

The Americans had not won consecutive World Cup matches since the start of the inaugural tournament in 1930, and they had not scored two or more goals in the first half of back-to-back World Cup games since the same edition. Both records fell on a commanding afternoon that demonstrated the depth and tactical flexibility of Pochettino’s squad.

Pulisic’s absence, confirmed 90 minutes before kickoff, prompted a tactical adjustment with Ricardo Pepi replacing him. The switch allowed the USA to deploy both Pepi and Balogun as a front two, pressing Australia’s center backs and linking with the wide players in possession. The approach worked to devastating effect. Balogun left Alessandro Circati for dead on the left wing in the 11th minute, surged to the end line and delivered a low cross that Cameron Burgess could only turn into his own net. It was the second consecutive game in which the USA had taken the lead through an own goal, a first in World Cup history.

Australia struggled to gain any foothold in the first half. The USA won virtually every duel, every second ball and every loose possession, with the high press disrupting the Socceroos’ buildup and preventing their center backs from hitting the long passes that had been so effective against Turkey. The second goal arrived just before the interval. Sergino Dest struck a shot from the edge of the box that took a deflection and looped high into the air. As the ball dropped in the six-yard box, Freeman got his head there ahead goalkeeper Patrick Beach to nod home. Freeman, the son of a Super Bowl winner, had his first World Cup goal, and the USA had a commanding 2-0 cushion at the break.

The second half was a more even affair as Australia showed the fight that had carried them to victory over Turkey in their opening game. Popovic’s side piled forward in the latter stages in search of a way back into the match, but the USA held firm to record their first clean sheet in 10 matches. Balogun might have added a third but Circati produced a vital block to prevent further damage.

Pochettino was thrilled with his side’s adaptability. “What I saw [was] a team that really believe in what it is doing with different plans and with different approach,” the USA coach said. “I think that capacity to adapt to the different demands of the game, and also our demand, like a coaching staff planning, different approach on the games, I think only I can say good and fantastic things about my players. They were fantastic.”

He elaborated on the pressing strategy that had suffocated Australia. “In the press conference [on Thursday, I said] that they don’t play long ball, they play long passes, and I think we forced them to play long. And because in the way that the players are so good, I think the way that we work, starting with our two strikers then behind [with] Weston [McKennie], [Dest], Malik [Tillman], Tyler [Adams], Antonee [Robinson], and was a very good job and make easy to our defensive line,” Pochettino said.

He also spoke about the bigger picture and the significance of the result. “I think it was a fantastic game, a very good first half. I think we dominated the game. When the draw [was made] in December, I thought it would be a tough game. I am so happy for the fans. It was impossible for Christian [Pulisic] to play but if we want to win the competition, we need the whole team,” Pochettino told Fox Sports.

Popovic was blunt in his assessment of a first half his side never got going in. “I don’t know if it was the occasion but we looked sluggish, heavy-legged. They were quicker, they were more powerful, they won every duel, every second ball and when you do that, it makes it very difficult to gain any momentum and then we conceded two soft goals. I thought the reaction second half was outstanding. [In the face of] this noise here [against] the host nation I think the players showed how good they are in the second half,” the Australia coach said.

He expanded on the contrast between the halves. “We didn’t match that in the first half. We found it difficult to win a challenge, to win a second ball. We were slow to every ball, and we couldn’t really wrestle back any momentum, which made it difficult. And we considered a couple of soft goals, really for us, they were soft goals, but we just looked flat and lethargic in the first half,” Popovic added.

Balogun, named Player of the Match for the second game running, paid tribute to his teammate. “We wanted to start fast like we did against Paraguay and it made the game so much easier. I’m so happy for Alex Freeman – he’s so humble and down to earth – to get his first World Cup goal. To be able to repay the fans on the biggest stage means the world to me. We’re going to rest and recover. We still want to win the next game against Turkey. The most important thing is that we stay down to earth, stay humble, and I’m sure we can do good things,” Balogun said.

The USA sit top of Group D on six points, three clear of Australia, with Turkey and Paraguay still to play their second matches. Pulisic is expected to return for the group finale against Turkey. Australia, by no means eliminated, can secure their own place in the knockout rounds with a victory over Paraguay in their final game. The press that has become a hallmark of Pochettino’s teams was slow to take root during his first year with the USMNT, but in Seattle it was apparent in everything the Americans did, and it has given the co-hosts belief that a deep run on home soil is within their reach.
