Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has criticised referee Paul Tierney after the official stood in the middle of his team’s pre-match huddle before Saturday’s Premier League match against Newcastle United.

Before kick-off at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea’s starting XI gathered around the centre circle for their usual pre-game huddle. However, Tierney remained standing on the centre spot holding the match ball and ended up in the middle of the players’ circle.

The unusual moment forced Chelsea’s players to conduct their team talk around the referee. Rosenior’s side went on to lose the match 1-0 after an early strike from Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.

Rosenior said the huddle is an initiative driven by the players and insisted it was meant to show unity before matches.

“I’m respectful to the game. My players made a decision that they wanted to be around the ball, to respect the ball and show unity and leadership,” Rosenior said.

“That is not my decision. That is a decision between the leadership group and the team. There is nothing that they’re doing with that huddle that is disrespectful to the opposition.”

The Chelsea coach also suggested Tierney should have been focused on officiating decisions during the match.

“If Paul had focused more on his job, which was to make the right decision, we’d have a penalty today,” Rosenior said.

“I don’t think anyone can say that Woltemade doesn’t kick Cole Palmer down in the box.”

Rosenior confirmed he did not approach Tierney after the game but plans to raise the matter with the referees’ governing body.

“I didn’t speak to Paul today, I didn’t think it was the right thing. But I’ll be speaking to PGMOL. I’ll be speaking to the refs, just trying to get an understanding of what happened.”

Former Premier League referee Andy Davies also questioned Tierney’s decision to remain on the centre circle during the huddle.

“The more I watch the pre-match Chelsea huddle with referee Paul Tierney not moving from the centre circle, the less I understand his decision to stay put and not allow them to have their moment,” Davies said.

“Tierney would have done his homework, he would have known that the Chelsea ritual was likely to happen, so why did he hold his ground and not take the opportunity to move to a more neutral position?”

Davies added that although Chelsea’s players appeared unfazed, the situation created poor optics for officials.

“The Chelsea players didn’t seem worried by Tierney’s presence, however the optics don’t look great for the PGMOL, the Premier League or Tierney raising their profile unnecessarily.”
