Leny Yoro Says Manchester United Squad Wanted Casemiro to Stay
- Leny Yoro said players at Manchester United F.C. hoped Casemiro would remain at the club.
- The midfielder is expected to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season despite fan calls for him to stay.
- Head coach Michael Carrick suggested the decision for Casemiro to depart is unlikely to change.
Manchester United defender Leny Yoro has said the squad were keen for Casemiro to remain at Old Trafford before the Brazilian announced plans to leave the club at the end of the season.
Supporters chanted “one more year” toward Casemiro after he scored in United’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa F.C. on Sunday.
Sources have indicated there is unlikely to be a reversal of the decision, but Yoro said the midfielder’s influence in the dressing room has been significant.
“Everyone wanted him to stay, he’s a player who is really important for us,” Yoro said.
“Even in the dressing room, every day, he has the experience that no one else has in the team.
“He won everything, so this helped us a lot in the games and even outside the pitch.”
United still hold the option to trigger a one-year extension in Casemiro’s contract, but it was mutually agreed in January that he would leave the club this summer.
Despite the uncertainty around his future, Casemiro has remained an important part of the team’s recent improvement under head coach Michael Carrick.
Carrick suggested, however, that the club’s decision is unlikely to change.
“I think when something’s decided, in some ways the fact that it was decided makes things a little bit easier and everyone understands the situation,” Carrick said.
“I think the impact he’s had has been terrific, certainly since I’ve been here working with him and his influence within the team and big moments and goals.”
