Manchester United Face Andre Onana Decision as Wages Set to Rise
• Andre Onana set to return from loan with salary increase looming
• United concerned higher wages could limit transfer interest
• Club weighing options amid strong form of current goalkeeping group
Manchester United are facing a decision over the future of Andre Onana, with the goalkeeper due to return this summer under circumstances that could complicate any potential move away.
Onana is currently on loan at Trabzonspor, but the deal does not include an option or obligation to buy, meaning he is expected back at Old Trafford ahead of pre season. His temporary departure was partly facilitated by a reduction in his wages following United’s failure to qualify for European competition.
However, with Michael Carrick guiding the team into third place and towards a return to the Champions League, Onana’s salary is set to revert to its previous level. That increase is understood to be a concern internally, as it may reduce the number of clubs willing to meet his terms in the transfer market.
United could therefore be required to subsidise part of his wages if they pursue another loan or permanent transfer. The 29 year old still has two years remaining on the contract he signed after joining from Inter Milan in 2023.
Sources close to the player indicate that his preference is to return to United and compete for a place in the squad, with discussions expected before the end of May.
The situation is influenced by the emergence of Senne Lammens, whose performances since arriving from Royal Antwerp have impressed the coaching staff. He is expected to remain first choice next season.
United are also considering changes to their goalkeeping depth. Altay Bayindir attracted interest from Besiktas in January and could move on in search of regular football ahead of the World Cup, while Tom Heaton is approaching the end of his current contract.
With multiple variables at play, United must now decide whether to reintegrate Onana or seek a solution that balances squad planning with financial considerations.
