  • The 2026 Finalissima between Spain national football team and Argentina national football team has been cancelled.
  • UEFA confirmed the decision after Qatar was deemed unsuitable due to regional political tensions.
  • The match was set to feature a first meeting between Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi.

The 2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina has been cancelled after organisers concluded that the match could not be safely staged in Qatar because of the current political situation in the region.

European champions Spain and South American champions Argentina were scheduled to meet in Doha on March 27 in the intercontinental showdown between the winners of UEFA Euro 2024 and the 2024 Copa América.

However, following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and the resulting regional tensions, Qatar was judged to be an unsuitable host venue.

In a statement released on Sunday, UEFA said discussions had taken place with CONMEBOL and local organisers in Qatar but a solution could not be found.

“After much discussion between UEFA and the organising authorities in Qatar, it is announced today that due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima cannot be played as hoped in Qatar,” UEFA said.

UEFA explored several alternative options to keep the fixture alive but none were accepted by the Argentine Football Association.

One proposal involved staging the match at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid on the original date with an even split of supporters.

UEFA also considered a two-leg format, with one game at the Bernabéu and another in Buenos Aires during a future international window before UEFA Euro 2028 and the 2028 Copa América.

Both options were rejected.

UEFA then attempted to secure Argentina’s agreement to play on March 27 or March 30 at a neutral venue in Europe if one could be arranged, but that proposal was also declined.

Argentina instead suggested staging the game after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, Spain had no available dates in the international calendar, making that plan impossible.

The Finalissima was set to be the fourth edition of the competition, which pits the European champions against the Copa América winners.

Argentina are the current holders after beating Italy national football team 3-0 at Wembley Stadium in 2022.

The match would also have seen Barcelona star Lamine Yamal face Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi for the first time in his career. Yamal, 18, has often drawn comparisons with Messi due to their similar paths at FC Barcelona, including playing from the right wing, being left-footed and wearing the No. 10 shirt.
